What is the fascination with collecting pebbles?

These are from my collection of hag stones collected over the years and the inspiration for an exhibition Time and Tide a few years ago.

Is it their ancient history that has formed their smooth surface or their mysterious layers fused together through forces unknown……or purely their aesthetic quality………the desire to possess them is overwhelming at times..I now just photograph them in their temporary resting place, replacing them where I happened upon them, not wanting to impede their journey, a struggle against the elements to return to, or escape the crashing waves.
